Making Your Own Circuit Boards and Stirling Engines

Engineering
Coco Kaleel will show step-by-step instructions on how to make custom circuit boards for your own technology projects. She will also demonstrate a Stirling engine that she machined from scratch, powered from the excess heat off a cup of hot water.

Coco Kaleel, a 10th grader, hopes to support and inspire technology novices and enthusiasts with her website www.veryhappyrobot.com. Embracing 3D printing, coding, design software, drones, and even Stirling engines, Coco encourages making technology, not just consuming it. Coco had the honor to co-write the foreword to "The New Shop Class: Getting Started with 3D Printing, Arduino, and Wearable Tech." Coco has presented her tech projects at Loscon43 and appeared as a panelist on topics such as “Arduino Grassroots Revolution” and “Women in STEM” at Loscon40, did a poster presentation at 3D Printer World Expo, gave her talk “Girls and Robots” at the Texas Linux Fest in Austin, delivered the conference warm-up and taught a soldering class to educators at the Design and Maker Class Colloquium in LA, and was thrilled to do a keynote at the 2016 Student Technology Conference and the 2017 Student STEM + Entrepreneur Conference sponsored by Marymount School in NYC. MAKE Magazine posted on their website about Coco and one of her mentors: “Soldering a Connection – The Start of a Mentoring Relationship” which was translated for MAKE: Japan. Coco enjoys fencing and robotics with her school teams, Latin club; plays saxophone; and is puppy-raising “Poe” a golden retriever for Guide Dogs of America.

What inspired you to make this project?
Coco made the Stirling engine for her school science fair project, inspired by a lesson in class. She learned to make circuit boards out of necessity to complete a commissioned work for a client.
