What inspired you to make this project?
The project was inspired by a simple question we hear often from students and families: “What does the future actually look like for me?” At Fifth Sun Pictures, our team has seen firsthand how traditional learning models can leave young people disconnected from opportunity—especially in communities facing digital access gaps.

Our work with schools, cultural institutions, and public agencies showed us that immersive tools like virtual reality, AI, and wearables can make learning tangible, human, and inspiring. Projects such as The Human Atlas and Learn Basic Tech grew out of a desire to blend storytelling, culture, and technology so learners can see themselves in the future—and begin building the skills to reach it.

What are some of the challenges you have encountered and how did you address them?
One of the biggest challenges we’ve encountered is that emerging technologies often move faster than institutions can responsibly adopt them. Schools and public agencies need structured pilot programs, clear success metrics, and standard operating procedures before integrating tools like VR or AI into classrooms.

We address this by designing small, supervised pilots with defined goals, training educators through professional development, and creating implementation guides for school leaders. Access is another barrier—many students lack reliable devices or broadband—so we build outreach kits and loaner systems to ensure equitable participation.

Youth safety and data privacy are central to our work. We prioritize age-appropriate use, supervised sessions, and FERPA-aligned data practices, minimizing data collection and clearly communicating consent and safeguards to partners and families.
