Dr. Ellen Ochoa: A Spark in Our Sky is an engaging, family-friendly play that brings the story of the first Latina astronaut to life through math, music, and the wonder of space. Designed for students K–12, the performance inspires young audiences to dream big while discovering the power of curiosity, perseverance, and STEM. Presented by Enrichment Works, a nonprofit dedicated to bringing professional theater into schools to spark learning and imagination.

Enrichment Works

Enrichment Works creates and presents professional theater to inspire learning.

Enrichment Works provides young people with what is often their first experience of a live theatrical performance and does so in a highly relevant and interactive form at schools, libraries, museums, and other public community venues. The organization integrates theater arts with these important subjects to help students connect emotionally to the topics dealing with history, morals & ethics, and stories about people in the Los Angeles community.

What inspired you to make this project?
The organization’s purpose is “to inform, inspire, educate and entertain youth and families, challenge youth to exceed expectations, enhance their self-esteem, increase their respect for other, develop their cultural and historic awareness, performance skills and critical thinking and serve the diverse population of Southern California.” This play was inspired by a need to inspire specifically Latinas and Girls in STEM, which is also the mission of Dr. Ellen Ochoa. With her help, we have developed a play we believe will inspire our youth to explore their imaginations and curiosity in STEAM. Enrichment Works stable of writers, directors, composers and actors includes Emmy, Tony, Drama Desk and Ovation award winners, a reflection on the commitment to producing high-quality pieces that respect the intelligence and integrity of the youth served.

What are some of the challenges you have encountered and how did you address them?
The arts funding has been slashed federally and school arts funding has been close to impossible to access. Our organization, who has survived largely on school performances is now switching gears to go direct to the community in hopes they will help bring this play to the children of Los Angeles.
